about

NOCTURNE

I began work on what became NOCTURNE in the fall of 2012. As a classically trained saxophonist living in the 21st century, I am painfully aware of the awkwardness, the anachronicity, of choosing an acoustic instrument built in the 19th century that barely had a chance to find its place in the established classical music world before that world started to deconstruct itself as my primary means of expression. There are modern classical works for saxophone that I love, and works yet to come that I will love, but often, I am hungry for music to play that I find compelling, interesting, memorable, and so on. It was time for me to create something on my own.

I am relatively new to free improvisation, and I am lucky to have played with a handful of experienced people over the last few years. My friend and mentor, Ron Stabinsky, explained to me once when I asked about how does one begin improvising, to "play the music that you think is missing". With that in mind, I recorded myself improvising every week for about a year, with that simple goal in mind - to create something I want to listen to.

I am also somewhat new to electronic music. I took my one class as a grad student about electronic music a long time ago and that was about it for me. Parallel to the improvisation project, I contacted Jack Sterbis, a person I remembered from my student days as incredibly passionate about electronic music and gear. The more I learned from Jack, the more I wanted to experiment with sound by electronic means in addition to playing the saxophone. Although I have created this album on my own, both Ron and Jack have been constant sources of support, information, and inspiration while I worked on this project: deepest respect and thanks to you both.

NOCTURNE consists of my five favorite tracks from those weekly improvisation sessions, that I later electronically manipulated one way or another using Ableton. For the third track, 3 A.M., I also included radar signals from space that I recorded live off of Space Weather Radio late one summer evening. I titled the album NOCTURNE because this is music I've made alone at night, during those special hours where it's dark, and quiet, and time feels different. I hope you listen, and I hope you enjoy.
