Michael Borella Rhonda Taylor, a professor of music at New Mexico State University, is also an improvising saxophonist. Her album “Chaos Theory” explores the concept of the importance of initial conditions, recording each solo sax track twice to showcase the impact of slight changes. Through free improvisation, she creates distinct, expressive compositions with intentional depth.

about

I began improvising the music for chaos theory in the summer of 2022. As I worked on the material, I found myself interested in exploring different outcomes from the same origins.

The term "chaos theory" was explained by mathematician Edward Lorenz as "when the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future." In other words, it's almost impossible to exactly know the future, because it's almost impossible to exactly know the present. Small events can have major impacts.

With this in mind, rather than record one album, I have recorded two. Or rather, I have recorded the same album twice, using the same artistic and technical starting points behind each track and its sister track. In addition to improvising two different versions of each track, I approached the F/X differently for each side. I think of Side A as somewhat natural, and Side B is more supernatural.

As always, these are one-take free improvisations that I have treated electronically in Ableton Live and an ancient version of PEAK. This sounds best with high-quality speakers/headphones.

Like always, I'm trying my best to express what is inside of me at the time, in the hopes that it might also sound like some of what's inside of you, and that you feel less alone in the world after listening.

Big love and thanks to Chris and Steph Preciado-Shelton, Tara Khozein, and Zach Barraza.
