Notes for NTH, Volume 3

This album is the last in the NTH series, a collection of solo improvisations that I began in 2016. For this project, NTH has represented two worlds for me; first, the definition of the word itself, and second, a more personal symbol of my work. Artist Ben Grosser once told me in conversation that I was looking for the edges - it's true that I want more of everything - quieter, louder, stranger, prettier, etc. The word nth of course means exactly that: extreme, utmost. On a more personal note, my idea with this series has been that NTH also symbolizes "Noise. Breath. Beyond." I don't know if I'm a saxophonist or a performance artist or just a human animal trying my best to express myself. Probably all three. I want to share the most vulnerable parts of myself and trust that those are also the most universal.

As with my earlier albums, the two tracks here are just single-take solo improvisations (no overdubs) that I recorded on cheap equipment alone in my office. I've edited and produced them using Ableton Live 9 and an ancient version of PEAK. They sound best if you use good speakers or headphones.

The track titles on the album come from The Samurai Creed. For years, I only knew the line, "I have no friends. I make my mind my friend." In recent years I have found the complete poem to be a source of strength and wisdom. Although my music is not programmatic, I found inspiration in these lines for my improvisations:

I have no parents. I make the heavens and the earth my mother and my father.

I have no life nor death. I make the tides of breathing my life and my death.

Special thanks to Chris Icasiano, Travis Fraser, Mike Hay, James Kilpatrick, Ahmi Ko, Tara Khozein, Fran Novak, and Neil Welch, plus everyone associated with Gallery 1412 in Seattle where I first publicly improvised on these ideas in the summer of 2018.

This album is dedicated to Arlene Carlson. Much love and deep respect.
